Reasons to Watch

Dive deep into the mind of Dario Argento. If you aren’t familiar with Argento and Italian Horror, this is the 2nd film in the Three Mothers trilogy. Suspiria is the first film in the trilogy, one of my favorite films of all time. With that said Inferno is a bloody Italian masterpiece.

The story of this Inferno can be a little confusing, but that doesn’t really matter because every other aspect of this film is top-notch.

The home where the film takes place feels like it was filmed in a museum. It’s dimly lit, covered in cobwebs, and filled with beautiful antiques. If you’re familiar with Argento, you know about his signature red and blue lighting, which is in full force across this set. Many scenes in this film feel more like a play than a film set.

But the kills are really where Inferno shines. All of the kills are absolutely vicious and unexpected. There’s a hallway scene set to an opera soundtrack when the lights go out that feels like horror perfection; you’ll know it when you see it.

Warning: Some scenes might make you uncomfortable if you are an animal lover, but there’s immediate karma. You could get away with some of these animal scenes in 1980, but they definitely wouldn’t work today.

If you are new to Italian Horror, we recommend you start with Suspiria, but this is also a great entry point that stands on its own despite being part of a trilogy.
