5 Friday the 13th Fun Facts

Source: Paramount Pictures
Since the first movie’s release in 1980, this series has inspired countless nightmares and spawned numerous sequels, prequels, and reboots. But how much do you really know about the masked killer, Jason Voorhees, and his reign of terror? Here are 5 fun facts about “Friday the 13th” that might surprise you.
1. The Mask
The mask was a last-minute addition to the movie, as the filmmakers felt Jason needed a distinctive look. The mask was originally designed to be a Detroit Red Wings goalie mask, but the filmmakers could not secure the rights to use it, so they created their own mask instead. The hockey mask has become synonymous with Jason Voorhees and the “Friday the 13th” franchise. The Mask was introduced in the 3rd Friday the 13th film.
2. Ki Ki Ki
The iconic “ki ki ki, ma ma ma” sound effect that plays whenever Jason is near was actually created by taking the “ki” sound from “kill” and the “ma” sound from “mommy” and splicing them together.
3. Long Night at Camp Blood
The original title for the first “Friday the 13th” movie was “Long Night at Camp Blood”. The title was changed to “Friday the 13th” to capitalize on the popularity of other horror movies with similar titles, such as “Black Christmas” and “Halloween”.
4. Banned
The “Friday the 13th” movies have been banned in several countries, including Germany, China, and Malaysia, due to their graphic violence and sexual content.
5. Gone Camping
The original “Friday the 13th” movie was filmed at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco, a Boy Scout camp in Hardwick, New Jersey. The camp was chosen as a filming location because it had the right look and feel for the movie’s setting, Camp Crystal Lake. The filmmakers were granted access to the camp during the off-season, when it was empty of campers, and they were able to use the camp’s facilities and buildings for the movie.
Today, Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco is still in operation as a Boy Scout camp, but it occasionally hosts tours and events for fans of the “Friday the 13th” franchise.
