Source: Pathé
Dog Soldiers” is a thrilling horror film that takes viewers on a heart-pounding journey through the Scottish Highlands. Directed by Neil Marshall, this 2002 cult classic delivers a unique blend of action, suspense, and gore, making it a must-see for horror enthusiasts.
Movie Summary:
The film follows a group of British soldiers on a routine training mission in the wilderness, only to find themselves under attack by a pack of werewolves. As the soldiers fight for survival, they must band together and rely on their training to outsmart and outmaneuver their vicious adversaries. With intense action sequences and a healthy dose of dark humor, “Dog Soldiers” keeps audiences on the edge of their seats until the very end.
Our Take:
Dog Soldiers is one of my favorite Werewolf films of all time. A majority of the film takes place in a remote house in the Scottish Highlands.
In the film, director Neil Marshall effectively creates a sense of claustrophobia and tension by making excellent use of the space. The setting itself becomes a crucial element of the horror experience. The old and isolated house feels tangible throughout the film, adding to the overall werewolf in the woods lore.
The werewolf design in “Dog Soldiers” is incredible. Standing at a 7ft tall, the werewolves are menacing and truly terrifying. What’s even more impressive is the minimal use of CGI in the film, which adds a gritty and realistic feel to the creatures, making them all the more terrifying. This attention to practical effects and creature design greatly enhances the impact of the film.
The story of “Dog Soldiers” moves in unexpected directions, adding depth to a film that initially seems straightforward.
The humor in the film is well-balanced and adds to the story without being excessive. It complements the intense and dark moments, providing moments of levity amidst the chaos. Overall, Dog Soldiers is a must-watch for fans of Werewolves who can appreciate a film with a smaller budget & British humor.
